The Statue of Liberty is a statue that was given by the French as a gift during the American Revolution. During the construction, there was financial problems for both sides. Americans were building the foot and French were building the statue. French designer Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was the person who came up with the design of Statue of Liberty. Statue of Liberty is a symbol of Freedom for America (Declaration of Independence). He came up with the design on 1876. Since there was financial problems for both sides, Joseph Pulitzer decided to criticize rich Americans for not donating, and middle-class for relying on rich Americans on newspapers. Americans immediately donated money after that. Later in 1885, Americans finished constructing the foot/support of the Statue of Liberty and French finished the statue on 1884. It was shipped to America later in 1885. In 1984, the United Nations decided to restore the Statue of Liberty. The restoration was completed in 1986. The island the Statue of Liberty is on was named Liberty Island later in the 20th century.
